If you are heading to Mumbai anytime soon (I know I know a lot of people have put off their trip to India and especially Mumbai for quite sometime now. But there are some, for whom India is home – terror attack or no attack; they still make their annual trips come what may. As I was saying if you are intending to touch down at Mumbai, do stop by Bungalow Eight – an eclectic lifestyle boutique. Named after New York’s most happening club, it is one of the most chic home stores in the city. Tucked away underneath the bleachers of the Wankhede Stadium, this 4000-square-foot emporium is designed as if it were an avant-garde home, set in Paris, in the 1920s with goodies scored from flea markets around the globe. The store specializes in unusual home accessories such as mother-of-pearl tissue boxes, contemporary block print linens, Art Deco armoires, Ikat shawls and much more. Bungalow Eight is the brain child of Maithili Ahluwalia – daughter of renowned jewelry designer Jamini Ahluwalia. An Economics and Sociology graduate from London School of Economics, Maithili worked as a management consultant in New York for 3 years and finally gave it up and followed her heart which was embedded in interior design. Recently she joined hands with French designer Mathieu Gugumus Leguillon to introduce her very own first fashion line called ‘The Bungalow’. The creations are mostly Western in silhouette but have an Indian appeal. Maithili’s philosophy is to make Bungalow Eight a one stop shop of rare finds in the world of fashion and furniture.
